Spanish Property Investments
One of Spain's Remaining Coastal Property Hotspots
We now own a cave house in the wonderful Murcia region of Spain, just 30km away from the Costa Calida near a village called Lamurta. We love it here so much that we decided to leave the UK in 2005 to live here permanently.

One of the problems we had when first visiting and buying in Murcia though was the lack of useful, specific and accurate information available.

So we decided we should write a book for other Brits who are keen on visiting Murcia and the Costa Cálida or investing in property here. Our book A Brit's Scrapbook: Going Native In Murcia tells you everything you need to know about enjoying the region as a visitor, investor or potential new native.

Fiesta 2008

All The Fun Of The Fiesta

Well it’s been a year in the making, but our fiesta patronale is well and truly ready.

Collectively we’ve fund raised, bingo’d (I know it’s not a proper word!), made dinner for 300 people, taken photos, dressed up as kings, waitered, cleaned, planned, argued, laughed, shouted, tasted, listened, decided and eventually we’re ready to party!

If last year is anything to go by then you’ll be a fool to miss our fiesta and I know you’re no fools! So come along and enjoy. Here’s the provisional calendar of events, look out on www.lamurta.com for the final details.

Saturday 19th April – the week before the fiesta really gets going we have a Caliche contest. Caliche (in our 4 inch thick Collins mega-dictionary) means ‘saltpetre’, or echar un caliche means something really quite surprising, and I’m not going to reproduce the translation here. Take my word for it, it’s a game played by men all over the Levante region, there are leagues and trophies, it’s very important and all above board.

Saturday 26th April – the first “proper” day and we have a dinner for the older people. Followed by a band. The band is due to start around 11pm, so don’t get here too soon, but do plan on staying late. We’re providing hot chocolate and cake at midnight to give you some strength to keep going!

Sunday 27th April a day for the boys really. We start off with a display of antique motorbikes and a shotgun shoot. There are loads of prizes for shooting participants, so it’s worth coming along. At lunchtime we have a giant paella, which is free for everyone who turns up. Bring a picnic table and some drinks if you want to make a meal of it. In the evening we have a DJ (one of our local guys who’s very funny!) and more caliche (the ladies are allowed to play this time) and games.

Wednesday 30th April – this is the night before the May Day bank holiday, so no excuses, I expect to see you here. We have yet another band and it’s our dressing up day – so bring your children along in their princess and pirate costumes, there’s lots of prizes to be won. We’ll keep your energy up by serving local bread and olive oil.

Thursday 1st May – this is our children’s day. We’ll have lots of theatre and games for the children. In the afternoon there’s a bingo with great prizes and all the women from the village will be bringing food to share. I’ve no idea what I’ll be making, maybe curry!

Friday 2nd May – I’m really looking forward to this night, our local drummer is playing with the rest of his band. Last year they were superb, a great mixture of Spanish and English songs.

Saturday 3rd May – this is the actual fiesta patronale day – día de Santa Cruz. This is a religious day with a mass, processions and storytelling. In the evening we have a huge group playing, they are really well respected in this area, they’re called Orquesta Roma. They will be loud and bright if their marketing material is anything to go by with 24000 watts of lights and sound!

Sunday 4th May – the last day of the fiesta. If you like horses come on over and enjoy the Rociero. We’ll have dancing horses, horses and carts, small horses, big horses, donkeys, mules, the whole lot. We have a mass in the morning, a barbecue at lunchtime and then to top it all you can try and catch a greased pig. Then at midnight we have our fireworks.

So, I would love to see you there. I’ll be the short blonde one, wearing a fiesta t-shirt and looking tired! Come and say hello, enjoy the hospitality of a small village who always punches above its weight in the fiesta arena. If you’re not sure what to do just find me. I’ll point you in the right direction. This really is Spain at its best, so partake, you won’t be disappointed!

La Murta is a village near Corvera, where the new airport is being built. We’re about 5km outside of Corvera and we’re signposted. If you’re coming pop me an email at debs@lamurta.com
